چکیده

Charitable Bequests and Wealth at Death Charitable bequests are a major source of income for charities but surprisingly little is known about them. The aim of this paper is to propose a multi-stage framework for analysing the bequest decision and to examine the evidence for Great Britain provided by new data on estates. The novelty of the framework is that it distinguishes between the different steps that lead to a charitable bequest. Our new data for Britain have the advantage of covering the whole population, in contrast to much of the US literature based on the small fraction of the population covered by estate tax returns. We focus on the relationship with wealth at death, on the form of the bequest, and on the different causes to which people bequeath. JEL Classification: D12, D31, D64, L31

Determining Who’s Altruistic: Evidence from Estate Tax Data

The role of intergenerational altruism in explaining disparities between predicted and actual patterns of wealth accumulation is still unclear. Recent works suggests traditional testing methods may fail because altruism is in fact heterogeneous across the population. This paper uses a heretofore unexamined data set to attempt to identify demographic characteristics that may be correlated with i...

Charity and the Bequest Motive : Evidence from Seventeenth

The findings that wealthier, more religious individuals, and those with fewer children give more to the poor suppo...

Intended and Accidental Bequests in a Life-cycle Economy

This paper studies the consequences of accidental and intended bequests in stochastic life-cycle models with uninsured idiosyncratic risk. Four main findings emerge. (i) Accidental bequests are nearly as large as total bequests in U.S. data. As a result, life-cycle models leave little room for intended bequests. (ii) Accidental or altruistic bequests can account for key features of bequest and ...
